Abstract

This study investigates the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in the sustainable management of Martian buildings. Given the challenges posed by resource limitations, harsh environmental conditions, and high operational costs on Mars, the study aims to evaluate how these technologies can optimize energy consumption, increase system efficiency, and enhance the quality of life for residents in Martian habitats. The research highlights the critical role of AI and IoT in energy management and environmental control, which are essential for sustaining life in such extreme conditions. To gather data, specialized questionnaires were distributed among 10 experts in space architecture, AI, and IoT. The data were analyzed using SWOT and AHP methods, which allowed for identifying and prioritizing the most crucial criteria, challenges, and opportunities related to the use of these technologies in Martian building management. The results were then further examined using sensitivity analysis to provide greater certainty to the results obtained. The findings revealed that the key strengths of AI and IoT implementation lie in energy optimization and cost reduction, both of which are vital for improving sustainability and reducing operational expenses in space missions. However, the study also identified significant challenges, such as the need for advanced infrastructure and the complexity of implementing these technologies in the harsh Martian environment. The opportunities for implementing AI and IoT include the continuous development of space technologies, advancements in data science, and the potential for further cost reduction in space missions. On the other hand, the main threats involve security risks, the unique environmental challenges of Mars, and vulnerabilities in the systems that could undermine their effectiveness. this research demonstrates that AI and IoT have the potential to significantly improve the energy efficiency, system performance, and quality of life within Martian habitats. The findings provide a solid scientific foundation for the future design and management of sustainable, smart buildings in extraterrestrial environments. Moving forward, it is recommended that future studies focus on conducting operational experiments, designing models resilient to extreme environmental conditions, and developing secure, reliable smart systems tailored for space missions.
