Key Points

  • The aim is to provide a thorough understanding of Asrigdara and its relation to menorrhagia based on Ayurvedic concepts and modern medicine.
  • Reviewed classical Ayurvedic literature and modern medical reports
  • Analyzed the interplay between hormonal systems affecting uterine bleeding
  • Categorized causes of excessive bleeding like DUB and Asrigdara
  • Identified 30-50% prevalence of excessive bleeding among reproductive age women
  • Outlined various underlying factors leading to Asrigdara
  • Discussed conventional treatments including hormone therapy and antifibrinolytics

Abstract

Ayurvedic medicine is among the oldest medical systems globally and continues to be a traditional healthcare system in India. Any irregularity in the menstrual cycle (Rituchakra) results in excessive and irregular uterine bleeding, referred to as "Asrigdara" in classical literature. The complex interplay between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, ovaries, and endometrium, along with the psychological impact on the hypothalamus and its subsequent effects on the pituitary and ovaries, complicates the identification of the precise abnormality or underlying cause of the condition. These instances are subsequently categorized as DUB or Asrigdara. Numerous reports indicate that between 30% and 50% of women of reproductive age experience excessive and prolonged uterine bleeding due to various underlying factors. Modern medical treatments such as hormone therapy, ant prostaglandins, and antifibrinolytic agents are commonly prescribed. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of Asrigdara.
