Abstract

Safety of women has become one of the most pressing issues in urban as well as rural areas. Although a number of safety solutions like mobile apps, alarms, and defense devices are available, they tend to malfunction at the time of need because they rely on internet connectivity or smartphone functionality. In order to overcome these shortcomings, this paper introduces the development and implementation of an offline-enabled safety gadget with GPS and GSM modules. The gadget enables users to share their current location via SMS to saved contacts upon pressing the SOS button. The system implemented with an ESP32 microcontroller, NEO-6M GPS module, and A7670/7600 GSM module powered by 3.7V 18650 rechargeable battery. The prototype was initially built on a breadboard and housed inside a protective box, and afterwards tested under various network and environmental conditions. Results show an average alert delivery time of 7 seconds, battery life of up to 72 hours, and consistent performance in offline conditions. The paper emphasizes the possibility of single-embedded devices in providing safety to women, tracking children, and monitoring elders.
