Abstract

Within the activities of the National Museum, education of museum professionals played an irreplaceable role, although it became more prominent only after 1945 and especially after 1948, when the National Museum was (in 1949) transformed into a state institution. As such, it was executing cultural and science policies of the state, at that time fully controlled by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, which had a monopoly on power. Even so, the programmes educating museum professionals, which operated through a collaboration between the National Museum and Faculty of Arts of the Charles University, achieved numerous notable successes. Their achievements were appreciated even abroad and significantly influenced the development of museum science both within the country and internationally. In the 1980s, it was decided, without any justification, that the museum science course implemented through a collaboration between the museum and the faculty should end. This was a needless step, and the programme has not been fully replaced to this day.
