Abstract

Bawean Island, situated in Gresik Regency, East Java, has witnessed a high intensity of earthquake. It consisted of several seismic events with the highest magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale. The event has resulted in structural damage and significant challenges for the locals. The geographical characteristics of the island is geologically categorized as earthquake prone areas. However, the locals continue to opt for continued to stay in the island. The objective of this study is to ascertain how the decision-making process of locals influences their choice to remain in areas that are susceptible to earthquakes. The present study employs a case study approach, utilizing mixed methods data collection in the course of its empirical research. This study defines the concept of sense of place to be able to explain the components that drive the locals’ decision to stay in earthquake-affected region. The results indicate that the community’s continued residence in Bawean is attributable to their strong sense of palace to the locale, which is rooted in the collective social bonds they share. Such strong social ties play a major role in promoting the resilience and building that reflect sustainable communities as aspire in SDG 11 and SDG 13.
