Abstract

This article synthesizes three independently developed frameworks Gradient Indeterminacy (I-G), the Multilevel Recursive Coherence (MRC) model of biological organization, and the Drain Vortex Principle into a unified theory of structure and failure in complex systems, in consonance with the Underlying Properties Hypothesis (UPH), which provides the conceptual foundation for why principles developed in one domain recur systematically across others. We propose that critical transitions across domains—from tropical cyclogenesis to malignant transformation—share a universal geometric signature: the collapse of con-figurational indeterminacy when systems approach fundamental gradient limits. Within biological systems, this manifests as the MRC framework, where health is a recursively validated, multi-scale oscillatory coherence. The breakdown of this coherence, leading to pathologies like autoimmunity or neurodegeneration, is formalized as a vortex-driven critical transition. Here, the Drain Vortex Principle provides the dynamical mechanism: as systems approach I-G saturation limits, pre-existing microscopic asymmetries are amplified, selecting the direction of collapse into a pathological attractor state. This synthesis grounds biological coherence in fundamental physics, offers a geometric language for critical transitions, and yields specific, falsifiable predictions for early diagnosis and coherence-restoring therapies.
