ABSTRACT Interior permanent‐magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) have been widely used in industry due to their high‐power density, high torque‐to‐inertia ratio and excellent robust characteristics. This paper investigates a novel real‐time varied switching frequency PWM method based on flux‐weakening control for high‐speed IPMSM drive systems. By adjusting the PWM frequency in real‐time from 10 to 17 kHz, at 2500 r/min, the current ripples of the IPMSM can be reduced 33% as compared to the fixed switching PWM frequency of 10 kHz and then a wider adjusting speed range can be achieved. A digital signal processor, type TMS‐320F‐28035, is used to execute the high‐speed control algorithms and contributes to a simplified hardware implementation. Detailed analysis is included and discussed. Several experimental results that compared the proposed method to the fixed switching frequency PWM method are discussed.
