The monitoring comprised the observation by a competent archaeologist of the mechanical excavation of a series of test pits associated with the renewal of the existing LPG pipe system. NCCES were informed in writing at least ten days in advance of the proposed start date of the fieldwork. Subsequently, during the course of the project (both fieldwork and post-excavation), the client and NCCES was regularly informed regarding progress and any developments. The contractor was responsible for marking out the locations of the test pits and locating any service trenches. Non-archaeologically significant deposits (topsoil) was removed by the groundworks contractors under archaeological supervision. Upcast spoil was examined visually. Intermittently, between October 2024 and April 2025, Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out a Programme of Archaeological Mitigatory Work (POAMW) during the excavation of test pits excavated in association with works to replace existing LPG pipework at Lakenheath Middle School, RAF Feltwell, Norfolk. A total of eight test pits were monitored but no pre-modern deposits, features or artefacts were recorded. All of the pits were located within the backfilled trenches of the original installation trenches and only made ground deposits were exposed.
