ABSTRACT In this paper, by utilizing the measurable information of some state components on one layer in the multilayer complex dynamical network with multidimensional node dynamics, the estimation of partial state components in target nodes on other layers is studied. To address this problem, a decomposition‐composition mechanism is proposed in the study of multidimensional node dynamics for the first time. The original multilayer complex dynamical network with multidimensional node dynamics can be transformed into a new multilayer complex dynamical network with one‐dimensional node dynamics. To satisfy the rank conditions for designing the functional state observer, the maximum matching principle in network graph theory is applied to select the auxiliary state components on which to place sensors. Furthermore, an appropriate functional state observer is designed to realize the state estimation of the partial state components in target nodes. Numerical results demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method. This study estimates the state of target components without requiring full‐state estimation, significantly reducing computational costs and observer complexity.
