Abstract

Aims: Obesity and overweight conditions are linked to an increased risk of skin infections, particularly fungal infections.This study explores the significance of the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the incidence of tinea pedis among farmers in Jember Regency, Indonesia. Methodology and results:This cross-sectional study in Jember Regency, Indonesia, examined 104 farmers meeting specific criteria: (a) signs and symptoms of tinea pedis, (b) at least five years of farming experience, and (c) no antifungal use in the past three months.Those with secondary foot infections or poor hygiene were excluded.Tinea pedis was diagnosed by a physician through history, examination, and culture.Data analysis using SPSS revealed a significant association between high BMI and tinea pedis incidence (p = 0.029), with 28 affected individuals. Conclusion, significance and impact of study:The findings indicate that obesity and overweight increase the risk of fungal infections, underscoring the need for targeted prevention strategies in at-risk populations.
