A Comprehensive Reanalysis of the Questionnaires in the National Assessment of Academic Ability with Elementary School Data: Focusing on Noncognitive Skills

HYHiroyuki YoshizawaITIori TaniHSHideharu Sugimoto

Key Points

  • The study aims to analyze noncognitive skills' impact on academic ability by reexamining questionnaire data from elementary school students.
  • Utilized psychometric methods to analyze questionnaire data from a national academic assessment.
  • Conducted exploratory factor analysis to identify underlying constructs.
  • Employed structural equation modeling to assess the relationships between noncognitive skills and academic performance.
  • Identified 10 factors related to noncognitive skills with confirmed reliability.
  • Found significant correlations between noncognitive skills like 'attitude towards problem-solving' and academic performance in various subjects.
  • Validated that the identified noncognitive factors effectively explain variations in academic ability.
