Abstract

1 Monofloral honey, sourced predominantly from a single floral species, is increasingly valued for its unique flavor, purity, and traceability. This study aimed to identify the dominant monofloral honey types in the Wag Lasta region of Ethiopia and assess their quality attributes in relation to consumer preferences. Honey samples were collected from three agro-ecologically distinct districts: Sekota, Zequala, and Gazgibla. Each sample underwent melissopalynological analysis to determine floral origin, alongside physicochemical testing and sensory evaluation by trained panelists. Four monofloral honey types were identified: Acacia asak , Hypoestes trifolia , Sorghum bicolor , and Echinops spp. , with floral dominance ranging from 51.6% to 81.2%. All samples met national and international honey quality standards. Sensory analysis revealed strong consumer acceptance for Acacia asak , Hypoestes trifolia , and Sorghum bicolor honeys, while Echinops spp. honey showed a lower preference due to its intense flavor. The findings confirm the potential for producing high-quality monofloral honey in Wag Lasta, capable of meeting market demand and commanding premium prices. To optimize production, beekeepers are encouraged to align harvesting with peak flowering periods.
