The role of African universities in knowledge production and dissemination is a critical aspect of higher education within the continent. In South Africa, this role extends to the field of African Studies. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative interviews with quantitative data analysis. The sample includes university administrators, researchers, and students from various institutions across the country. Findings indicate that while universities play a significant role in producing knowledge within their specialized fields, there is also evidence of challenges such as resource constraints and institutional barriers to effective dissemination. The study concludes that strategic interventions are necessary to enhance both the production and dissemination of knowledge within African higher education institutions. Recommendations include the need for increased investment in research infrastructure, strengthening partnerships between universities and industry, and fostering a culture of collaboration among researchers.
