I prove that √(n(n+2)) is irrational for every positive integer n. The proof is three lines. As a corollary, √(j(j+1)) is irrational for every half-integer j ≥ 1/2, and the dimensionless geometric factor 8π√(j(j+1)) in the loop quantum gravity area spectrum is transcendental for every spin.
