Abstract

Abstract: This paper excavates the primary contributions of Charles Willson Peale (1741–1827) and his family to American ornithology. It draws on a unique digital inventory of Peale's taxidermy collection—documenting over 600 bird species—to chronicle the development of his arsenic bath technique (1788), the growth, management, and significance of his collection (1786–1845) and its eventual dispersal after the museum's closure (1845–2025). Rediscovered manuscripts of Peale's ornithological lectures ( c .1799) reveal the depth of his anatomical, behavioral, biogeographic, and taxonomic knowledge. Peale was not only well-versed in scientific literature; he also conducted intensive fieldwork in the eastern United States, made significant improvements to taxidermy methods, sent his sons on foreign collecting expeditions, mobilized a network of citizen-donors, and initiated exchanges with scientific institutions in England, France, and Sweden. He displayed specimens in purpose-built glass cases, arranged according to the Linnaean system, and trained his children—Titian I, Titian II, Raphaelle, Rubens, and Sophonisba—and an enslaved servant, Moses Williams, to collect and prepare bird specimens with his arsenic-based methods. Peale built the infrastructure that enabled fact-based claims in the scientific works of Alexander Wilson, Charles Lucien Bonaparte, etc., to be independently verified. However, because of persistent historiographical errors, the originality and primacy of Peale's contributions to bird knowledge were nearly forgotten. This paper restores his legacy and provides a new empirical foundation for discussions of the history of American ornithology.
