Key Points

  • The study aims to investigate the relationship between oral contraceptive use and risk of low energy availability in female university soccer players.
  • Examined training loads and fitness adaptations in relation to oral contraceptive use.
  • Utilized small sample size of female university soccer players.
  • Monitored session rating of perceived exertion (sRPE) during practices.
  • No consistent association found between oral contraceptive use and training loads.
  • No significant link detected between low energy availability risk and fitness adaptations.

Abstract

LEA risk and OC use presented no consistent association with training loads and fitness adaptations in university soccer players. Small sample size and sRPE monitoring focused on practices only limited the generalizability of our findings and a clearer understanding of the total weekly training load.
