Standardization is one of the important parts of mechanical engineering and related fields. This article describes standardization activities of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, focusing on ISO, JIS and JSME standards. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) was established in 1946 and currently publishes 25,914 standards with 173 participating countries. There are currently 827 technical committees and the first technical committee TC1 is related to screws. JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) are national standards for mining, manufacturing, etc. JIS was established in 1949 and currently 10,994 standards have been published. JSME also has been published 19 standards. They include explanations of theories, experience, track record, rational and efficient methods and procedures for design, manufacturing, experiments, testing, inspection and research, as well as terminology and product standards. Under the ISO/JIS/JSME standards committee, which is part of JSME, there are committees involved in the establishment and revision of ISO standards, JIS and JSME standards.
