Key Points

  • The central aim is to explore how cored wires can improve the efficiency and versatility of wire-laser directed energy deposition in metal additive manufacturing.
  • Analyzed the compatibility of cored wires with existing wire-laser DED methods.
  • Evaluated cost-effectiveness and deposition efficiency of the process.
  • Identified limitations related to material selection due to feedstock customization.
  • Cored wires enhanced deposition efficiency significantly compared to traditional solid wires.
  • The method demonstrated lower material costs, making it economically viable for industrial applications.
  • Limitations in material compatibility were observed, restricting some customization possibilities.

Abstract

In recent years, metal additive manufacturing (AM) has gained significant traction in industrial applications across Japan. Wire-laser directed energy deposition (DED-LB/W), an AM process based on build-up welding, is compatible with conventional manufacturing technologies and has been used for applications such as impeller fabrication and mold repair. This method utilizes commercially available solid wire, providing benefits such as low material cost and high deposition efficiency. However, the range of usable materials is constrained by wire-drawing requirements for specified diameters, posing challenges to feedstock customization compared with powder-based AM processes.
