本稿は,サードエイジという視点から高齢期のウェルビーイングを,健康や機能の水準だけでなく,社会参画や生きがいとの関係から捉え直すことを目的とする.急速な社会変化と平均寿命の延伸により,多くの人が熟年モラトリアムとも呼ぶべき役割不確実な時期を生きている.サードエイジの社会参画モデルと生きがいモデルを手がかりに,高齢期における主体的選択の重要性を示すとともに,医療の場でのコミュニケーションや年齢に基づく扱いが,高齢者の自己理解やウェルビーイングに影響を及ぼしうることを論じる.
