Mn - and OK X-ray absorption spectra were used to study the charge state of manganese ions and the phase composition of the surface layers of nanostructured lanthanum manganite LaMnO after torsion deformation under pressure. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a decrease in crystallite size and an increase in microstresses in the lanthanum manganite with increasing strain, but no changes in the structure and phase composition of the nanostructured lanthanum manganite compared to the initial manganite were detected. However, studies of lanthanum manganite using X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed a phase decomposition of the manganite after deformation: in addition to the initial LaMnO3 manganite, MnO, MnO, and La-O phases appear. Unlike X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, implemented in total electron yield mode, is a surface-sensitive method with an information depth of approximately 10 nm. This suggests that changes in the phase composition of manganite occur on the surface of its constituent crystallites. Thus, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy can serve as a method for phase analysis of surface oxide layers and surface modification of oxide materials after intense plastic deformation.
