Abstract

Boreal forests are one of the largest carbon reservoirs on the planet. Green-moss-pine forests predominate in Eastern Fennoscandia, which is characterised by the prevalence of light-textured albeluvisols. In the middle taiga communities of Karelia overripe stands are quite common in protective forests that occupy more than 30% of the republic’s territory. A test site of intensive level, type I was set up in the Kivach Nature Reserve, where the distribution of carbon among all components of the ecosystem was studied on permanent test plots using the methods adopted in the RITM Carbon consortium. The article presents data on carbon reserves in the main pools of dwarf shrub-green-moss-pine forests. It was found that the studied ecosystems contain an average of 176 t C/ha. The phytomass of the forest stand contains 60% — 100 t C/ha, the phytomass of the young growth and undergrowth — 1 t C/ha, coarse woody debris — 9 t C/ha, living ground cover — 3 t C/ha. The second largest carbon pool is the soil pool, the forest litter accumulates an average of 23 t C/ha, and the mineral part — 32 t C/ha.
