Abstract

Abstract Sorghum almum is widely reported in ethnomedicine for blood stimulation, blood purification, and enhancement of body defense mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate the hematological activity of aqueous leaf base extracts of S. almum. The immunological effects were assessed through standard hematological indices. Administration of the extract at doses of 100–300 mg/kg showed no significant changes in packed cell volume, hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count, total leukocyte count, monocytes, basophils, eosinophils, bleeding time, or clotting time. However, the 100 mg/kg dose produced a significant increase in neutrophil count with a corresponding decrease in lymphocytes, while platelet count was significantly elevated at 300 mg/kg. These findings do not support the ethnomedicinal claim of blood-stimulating activity but suggest a potential role in enhancing non-specific immune responses associated with inflammation.
