Key Points

  • This research aims to explore how perceptions of peer acceptance of e-cigarettes change before and after initiation among young people.
  • Compared peer norm perceptions before and after e-cigarette initiation
  • Focus on youth and young adults
  • Evaluated baseline perceptions and their changes post-initiation
  • Young individuals had higher baseline perceptions of peer acceptance of e-cigarettes before initiation
  • Perceptions of peer acceptance increased further after individuals initiated e-cigarette use

Abstract

We find that young people who would go on to initiate e-cigarette use already had elevated perceptions of peer acceptance of e-cigarettes at baseline, but these effects are amplified after initiation.
