Abstract

The internationalization of teacher training needs to be considered from two aspects that Japanese teachers are required to respond to globalization and that they need to be able to deal with linguistically and culturally diverse children in schools. This paper first examines trends in the internationalization of teacher training in response to globalization in relation to the policy of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and then discusses the overseas programs implemented at Osaka Kyoiku University as a case study. Next, it examines the efforts being made in teacher training universities to respond to the various school issues that have arisen with the increase in the number of children with foreign roots. We will then consider the 'intercultural competence' that is common to the internationalization of these two aspects of teacher education and make some recommendations regarding the challenges and future development of the internationalization of teacher education in Japan.
