Key Points

  • The aim is to evaluate how electron beam and atomic oxygen affect the mechanical properties of polyimide CFRP.
  • Conducted irradiations with electron beam and atomic oxygen on polyimide CFRP.
  • Evaluated mechanical properties post-irradiation.
  • Assessed impact fracture and bending properties.
  • Electron beam and atomic oxygen exposure altered mechanical properties.
  • Significant changes observed in impact fracture properties.
  • Bending properties were also modified after exposure.

Abstract

It is anticipated that polyimide matrix carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (polyimide CFRP) with both high formability and high heat resistance will be utilized in space-related applications. After electron beam and atomic oxygen irradiations, the effects of mechanical properties, impact fracture properties and bending properties, were examined.
