Abstract

The article discusses the current problem of ensuring fire safety during the transportation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which is caused by the high risk of thermal runaway leading to combustion and explosion. An analysis of the current regulatory framework has revealed that the existing requirements for containers for the transportation of LIBs are focused primarily on mechanical strength and do not take into account the thermal load associated with the possible thermal runaway of the batteries. This creates gaps in ensuring fire safety during the transportation of LIBs. The article presents the results of a series of preliminary experiments on modeling thermal runaway in a closed volume. Tests of LIA samples demonstrated reproducible stages of emergency mode development: from initial heating and gas release to a general flash and subsequent extinction. It has been established that limiting oxygen access, reducing battery charge, and providing free space allow for the control and termination of the combustion process.
