Key Points

  • The aim is to design and analyze deep molecular bowls with specific curvature and oxidation properties.
  • Synthesized a series of buckybowls incorporating pyrrole and cyclopentadienyl pentagons.
  • Conducted X-ray crystallographic analyses to examine bowl depths and curvatures.
  • Investigated reversible oxidation behaviors toward cations and dications alongside supramolecular interactions.
  • Confirmed significant deepening of bowl depths and increased curvatures.
  • Established reversible oxidation behaviors in the presence of cationic radicals and dications.
  • Identified intriguing supramolecular properties with fullerenes.

Abstract

The study of deep molecular bowls featuring high curvature and tailored properties remains rare. In this work, we report a series of buckybowls that incorporate pyrrole-type and cyclopentadienyl-type pentagons. X-ray crystallographic analyses confirmed their significantly deepened bowl depths and high curvatures. Their reversible oxidation behaviors toward cationic radicals or dications and supramolecular properties with fullerenes have been thoroughly studied. Overall, this study provides a rational design strategy for deep buckybowls.
