This study focused on young Japanese people's gambling characteristics and aimed to (a) measure gambling behavior through a web survey, (b) consider the problem of gambling from both the harmonious and obsessive passion perspectives, and (c) examine the relationship between problem gambling, gambling passion, and beliefs about money. The results of a Web screening survey of 3000 participants showed that the rate of participation in gambling over the past year was approximately 20%.The main survey of 184 people who gambled at least once a month revealed that 14.4% were at-risk gamblers and 27.8% were problem gamblers. We also found a link between obsessive passion and problem gambling behavior.Individuals with strong beliefs about money, such as the equivalent value of work, the difficulty of acquisition, and importance, tended to have low obsessive passion toward gambling. We hope that this knowledge will be useful for providing evidence-based treatment and preventative education for young people with problem gambling.
