Purpose This study investigates the communicative roles, experiences and evaluations of disability-focused non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Türkiye following the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquakes. It explores their participation in disaster risk communication and disaster risk reduction (DRR) processes, as well as their recommendations for inclusive communication strategies targeting persons with disabilities. Design/methodology/approach The research employs an exploratory qualitative design. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives of 13 NGOs working in the field of disability between February and June 2025. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in participants’ experiences, focusing on communication practices, barriers and institutional coordination. Findings Findings reveal that challenges faced by persons with disabilities in accessing information, services and aid stem primarily from structural exclusion rather than individual limitations. NGOs acted as vital communication and coordination bridges during the earthquakes, yet their institutional inclusion in official DRR planning remains limited. Strengthening their communicative capacity and participation is essential for inclusive disaster governance. Originality/value This study is among the first to centre the communicative experiences of disability-focused NGOs in Türkiye, contributing to the limited literature on disability-inclusive disaster risk communication and offering policy-relevant insights for equitable and resilient disaster management systems.
