Abstract

Abstract: The Global Hispanophone, as a field of study, is relatively recent: it was coined by the Modern Language Association in 2015 following the pattern of similar designations such as the Global Lusophone, Francophone, or Anglophone. This institutional genealogy invites reflection on the role of academic organizations in shaping our intellectual geographies, while also calling for a renewed commitment to archives, communities, and experiences that exceed conventional field and disciplinary boundaries. The category, of course, carries different connotations depending on where and by whom it is invoked, and many scholars—including contributors to this volume—have long engaged with the areas and conceptual issues it seeks to embrace. One unifying impulse has been to expand beyond the traditional Spain versus Latin America binary by turning the focus onto Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Western Sahara, Ceuta, Melilla, Equatorial Guinea…), Asia (Philippines, Mariana Islands…), and other Atlantic, Pacific, or Mediterranean localities in between. At the same time, the Global Hispanophone is inherently defined by its dispersed and heterogeneous nature; this elicits several questions: What justifies grouping such diverse regions under one banner? How do we address marginality without reinscribing colonial center/periphery dynamics? Which diasporic experiences do we incorporate? And how might academic inquiry and scholarly endeavor interact with cultural activism within Global Hispanophone studies?
