Key Points

  • To explore the relationship between perioperative systemic stress phenotypes and long-term health outcomes in colorectal cancer patients.
  • Identified and quantified stress-related biological responses during the perioperative period.
  • Monitored immune recovery and presence of molecular residual disease post-surgery.
  • Analyzed long-term health outcomes in participants.
  • Sustained stress phenotypes were linked to immune recovery failure post-surgery.
  • Presence of molecular residual disease was predicted by identified stress markers.
  • Adverse long-term outcomes correlated with dysregulated immune responses.

Abstract

Perioperative systemic stress phenotypes reflecting sustained psychoneuroendocrine-immune dysregulation are associated with immune recovery failure, molecular residual disease, and adverse long-term outcomes following a major surgery. Quantifying dynamic stress-related biological responses may provide a biologically grounded framework for understanding how acute psychoneuroendocrine stress translates into persistent immune vulnerability and may inform future risk stratification research in perioperative oncology.
