Key Points

  • The research aims to define Infrastructural Exposure Theory and its implications for understanding system behavior under stress.
  • Analyzed existing literature in media studies, organizational theory, and crisis analysis.
  • Developed a diagnostic framework using Infrastructural Exposure Theory to interpret system behavior.
  • Identified key forces influencing institutional evolution through exposure events.
  • Exposure events reveal hidden assumptions and operational dependencies in systems.
  • Infrastructural exposure offers a valuable lens for diagnosing system behaviors.
  • Understanding exposure enhances comprehension of the relationship between infrastructures and cognition.

Abstract

Infrastructural Exposure Theory defines how systems—technical, bureaucratic, economic, and social—reveal their underlying logic under conditions of stress. Exposure events occur when infrastructures are pushed beyond their designed tolerances, causing hidden assumptions, incentive structures, and operational dependencies to become visible. Drawing on research in media studies, organizational theory, and crisis analysis, the essay argues that exposure is not an anomaly but a predictable structural phenomenon. SignalRupture positions infrastructural exposure as a diagnostic lens for reading system behavior, mapping structural truth, and identifying the forces that shape institutional evolution. In a digitally mediated world, exposure becomes a critical method for understanding how infrastructures shape cognition, visibility, and agency.
