Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare and nursing education with broad impacts on a variety of aspects in teaching, learning, and practice. A novel framework, SAFE CARE, list stakeholders, state the AI prompt, outline the function, evaluate using critical thinking and judgement, reflect upon how AI augments (not replaces) human intelligence and capabilities, and ensure responsible and ethical use of AI provides a method for operationalizing comprehensive and reflective critique of AI. Grounded in the data-information-knowledge-wisdom (DIKW) model and aligned with essential informatics and healthcare technology competencies, this novel approach focuses on key considerations to promote ethical and responsible use of AI. This framework encourages the deeper cognitive work of analyzing, synthesizing, and critically evaluating AI tools and output before proceeding to action. The benefits of this framework are not limited to students, as engagement in the steps outlined in SAFE CARE can also facilitate the development of relevant AI competencies for nurses and nurse educators. As educational and healthcare systems rapidly evolve during this transformational era of AI, SAFE CARE serves as a scalable, systems-level approach to aid nurse educators and students in developing critical capacities needed to lead confidently and competently in an AI-augmented future.
