Key Points

  • To assess the quality of life trajectories in young athletes following ACL reconstruction and explore associated growth mechanisms.
  • Mixed methods study design
  • Assessment of perceived quality of life one year post-surgery
  • Qualitative analysis to identify growth mechanisms
  • Young athletes showed acceptable quality of life levels at one year post-surgery
  • Identified growth-related mechanisms contribute to improved quality of life

Abstract

Young athletes generally regained acceptable levels of perceived QOL at 1-year postoperative following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The presence of sport injury-related growth mechanisms may help explain these favorable trajectories and should be considered when interpreting postoperative outcomes.
