The liver is distinguished by well-defined lobules, prominent portal triads and metabolically active hepatocytes, and the gallbladder is characterized by mucous folds that allow the storage and evacuation of bile (Trautmann & Fiebiger, 2015). These features allow the pig to efficiently digest a varied diet, with an optimal hepatic detoxification and a robust intestinal immune response.
