research institute affiliated with the University of the Ryukyus dedicated to advancing disaster risk reduction research for island regions in southwestern Japan. The center places particular emphasis on the Nansei Islands, including the Ryukyu Islands and the Daito Islands.Island regions are especially vulnerable to a wide range of natural hazards-such as earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, heavy rainfall, landslides, and flooding-due to their geographical isolation, limited redundancy of lifelines, and strong dependence on external supply chains.Recognizing these challenges, the primary aim of the center is to deepen scientific understanding of island-specific disaster mechanisms and to develop practical, regionally optimized strategies for disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery.By integrating expertise from the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and education, together with interdisciplinary collaboration that has included medical and health sciences, the center seeks to bridge academic research with policy formulation, community-based disaster management, and public education, thereby contributing to the long-term safety, resilience, and sustainability of island societies.
