Numerous fungal species of medical importance have been subjected to nomenclatural changes in recent years as a result of phylogenetic analysis based on DNA sequences to fungal classification, eliciting heated debate on whether such changes will confuse clinicians and harm patients. Here, we explained the taxonomic rationale and the clinical significance of the key nomenclatural revisions. Potential mechanisms to mitigate unnecessary taxonomic instability and specific examples of changes are suggested.
