Education is not only the means to acquire a degree, but also the mainstay of a nation’s self-identity and creative development. To achieve this goal, India’s National Education Policy 2020 was launched after 34 long years since 1986. This is a landmark step in breaking the shackles of colonial mentality and facing the challenges of the 21st century. Along with many changes in this policy, emphasis has also been laid on imparting education in the mother tongue. Therefore, the main goal of the present research paper is to analyze the importance of education in the mother tongue, its theoretical basis and its implementability in the context of this education policy. That is why this study has shown through the use of descriptive methods and secondary data that the role of the mother tongue in the intellectual and cognitive development of the child is undeniable. In addition, the new 5+3+3+4 structure proposed in this education policy, the recommendation to make the mother tongue the medium of instruction up to the fifth grade (if possible, up to the eighth grade) and in higher education is also a strong commitment to social justice and inclusive education. Because education in the mother tongue will not only bridge the learning gap of rural and marginalized students, but will also instil confidence in all students. With this, India will be able to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal and establish itself as a global knowledge superpower.
