Escándalo y modernismo: el caso de Mata Hari y Enrique Gómez Carrillo en la red intelectual transatlántica

RESUMEN: Este artículo investiga el escándalo que involucró a Enrique Gómez Carrillo, destacado exponente del modernismo hispanoamericano, con Mata Hari, la famosa bailarina ejecutada acusada de espionaje durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Aunque las evidencias sugieren que no se conocieron, el rumor de su romance y la presunta implicación de Gómez Carrillo en su arresto generaron gran controversia tanto en América Latina como en Europa. Este estudio explora el origen y las motivaciones del escándalo, así como su papel en la generación de una red intelectual transatlántica. Además, analiza cómo este episodio contribuyó a la proyección internacional de varios escritores hispanoamericanos, incluyendo a Gómez Carrillo, dentro del contexto global de los grandes escándalos del período. Asimismo, se examina la circulación transatlántica del rumor y su papel en la mundialización del modernismo, destacando la importancia del análisis de rumores y escándalos como parte de su propio legado. Abstract: This article investigates the scandal involving Enrique Gómez Carrillo, a prominent figure of Spanish-American Modernismo , and Mata Hari, the famous dancer executed for espionage during World War I. Although evidence suggests they never met, rumors of their romance and Gómez Carrillo's alleged involvement in her arrest sparked significant controversy in both Latin America and Europe. This study explores the origins and motivations behind this scandal, as well as its role in fostering a transatlantic intellectual network. Furthermore, it analyzes how this episode contributed to the international prominence of various Hispanic American writers, including Gómez Carrillo, within the global context of the major scandals of the period. The article also examines the transatlantic circulation of the rumor and its role in the globalization of Modernismo , emphasizing the importance of analyzing rumors and scandals in the study of the literary movement and as part of its own legacy.
