Abstract Introduction Reports indicate that oral intake of the supplement derived from (Silkworm Cordyceps), a type of Cordyceps, improves cognitive function and sleep quality while also increasing testosterone levels. Conversely, other reports suggest testosterone is involved in the development of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). Therefore, we conducted a retrospective study at our clinic to examine changes in testosterone levels and SMI scores (Simplified Menopause Index) in GSM patients taking the silkworm Cordyceps supplement. Objective There were 9 GSM patients (5 premenopausal, 4 postmenopausal) with autonomic imbalance symptoms such as general fatigue in our clinic. Methods We measured the SMI score (Simplified Menopause Index) and total/free testosterone levels before and after 4 weeks of treatment in those patients who wished to take capsules containing 800 mg of refined silkworm Cordyceps sinensis powder (First Industries Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.) (4 capsules/day). Results The SMI score decreased significantly from a pre-treatment mean of 54 points (range: 72-43) to a post-treatment mean of 41 points (maximum 55, minimum 21) after administration, showing a significant difference (P 0.01). Testosterone levels increased significantly from a pre-administration mean of 0.078 ng/ml (range: 0.29-0.03) to a post-administration mean of 0.11 ng/ml (range: 0.29-0.03), showing a significant difference (P 0.05). Free testosterone showed an upward trend in postmenopausal patients but no consistent trend in premenopausal patients. Conclusions The silkworm Cordyceps supplement showed potential to increase testosterone levels and improve menopausal symptoms in GSM patients. Disclosure No.
