Previous work on the defences of this important border borough is summarized. In Wyebridge Street were found remains of Roman ironworking and occupation of 12th century onwards. The Dixton Road site yielded a substantial defensive rampart and ditch, probably med, possibly earlier than the town wall of late 13th/early 14th. Neither site produced many finds.
