XPT One (CFIA Registration No. 9659) is the first non-darkening pinto bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar ever developed and released, originating from the Dry Bean Breeding Program at the University of Guelph. Averaged across eight common environments, the seed yield of XPT One (2652 kg ha⁻¹) was statistically similar to the slow-darkening ND-Palomino (2585 kg ha⁻¹), but approximately 700 kg ha⁻¹ lower than La Paz (3355 kg ha⁻¹) and 540 kg ha⁻¹ lower than Staybright (3193 kg ha⁻¹). XPT One is a mid‑season cultivar that retains its light seed coat colour during storage, avoiding discounts typically applied to darkened conventional pinto beans. It has excellent harvestability and other agronomic and economic traits fall within acceptable commercial ranges for pinto bean production. The cultivar is well adapted to dry bean‑growing regions across southern and western Ontario and exhibits resistance to Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV).
