Abstract Effective waste management strategies are essential for sustainable urban development. Rapid urbanization and population growth have led to an increase in waste generation in developing countries like India. Waste management in urban areas poses a major challenge to administration departments of metropolitan cities and municipalities. This article explains the current challenges and explores various waste management strategies that can be implemented to address these challenges. Implementation of the strict policies for waste segregation at the source, the establishment of efficient recycling systems, and the implementation of public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about waste reduction practices may be the effective solutions to waste management. Application of smart technology in waste management, establishment of waste to energy plants and digital platforms for waste tracking, is examined. Encouragement of community involvement and public-private partnerships in enhancing waste management efficiency is discussed.
