When discussing family or faith communities, the critical role of women in the transmission and nurturing of faith cannot be overlooked. This fact is particularly evident in the Chinese Church. Historically, conversions to Christianity in the Chinese socio-cultural context were often collective actions that the entire family and family clan undertook and often it was because a male patriarch decided to become Christian, and all the family were expected to follow him. However, in Catholic families, since women are the primary caregivers for children, they bear the responsibility of transmitting and fostering faith in their children and other family members. This article reviews the significant role women have historically played in nurturing faith within the Catholic Church in China. Drawing on real-life examples, the article demonstrates that Chinese women though were once subjected to foot-binding and marginalized by society, they remain the pillars of the Church’s development in the region. It also looks to the experience of the very tiny Tibetan Catholic community and tells the story of women who kept the faith alive there. And through this I assert that women exercising agency as formators of faith in the Chinese church is an important indicator of their contribution for realizing synodality.
