ABSTRACT This study investigates the synergistic flame‐retardant and smoke‐suppression effects of an aluminum hydroxide/antimony pentoxide (ATH/Sb 2 O 5 ) composite in epoxy‐modified polysulfide rubber (PSR), and explores the underlying synergistic mechanism. Compared to PSR containing ATH or Sb 2 O 5 alone, the ATH/Sb 2 O 5 ‐PSR composite demonstrates a significantly higher limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 27.7%, a lower peak heat release rate (pHRR) of 208.9 kW/m 2 , and a reduced total smoke release (TSR) of 174.9 m 2 /m 2 . This synergy not only effectively enhances the flame retardancy of PSR but also suppresses the release of toxic gases, notably SO 2 .
