Autonomous and unified bar, a distant dream during the entire British regime was finally founded through the Advocates Act, 1961in independent India. The Act of 1961 was delightful legislation,a way to provide autonomy and unification, with which the bar was enabled to make its own decisions regarding its necessary actions andpropose analogous rules to each legal practitioner, irrespective of their caste, religion, culture, color, place of working or even the nationality. This nature of the bar has played a significant role in the robust legal profession of the country since independence to date, however, recently, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice proposed an amendment to the Advocates Act, 1961, by the Advocates Amendment Bill 2025. Despite a few benefits as stated by the ministry, the proposed amendments seem to raise serious concerns about undermining the fundamental principles of autonomy of the bar and interference of the government in the legal profession as well as the fairness that the current legal system upholds.
