A Case Study on the Management of Renal Calculi (Ureteric and Renal) With Ayurvedic Formulations

Background: Renal calculi (urolithiasis) are a common and recurrent condition with a significant global burden. Modern management includes analgesics, alpha-blockers, and surgical interventions like lithotripsy. However, there is a growing need for effective conservative management to address small-to-medium sized calculi and prevent recurrence. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach through Mutravirechaniya (diuretic) and Ashmarihara (lithotriptic) drugs. This case study evaluates the efficacy of a specific Ayurvedic regimen in managing multiple renal and ureteric calculi. Materials and Methods: A 36-year-old male patient presented with ultrasonography (USG) findings dated 18th March 2026, revealing three calculi: a 6 mm calculus at the right ureterovesical junction (non-obstructive), a 4 mm calculus at the mid-pole of the right kidney, and a 3 mm calculus in the lower pole of the left kidney. The patient was prescribed Arogyavardhini Vati 2 tablets twice daily (BD), Varunadi Kashaya 10 ml three times a day (TDS), Chitrakadi Vati 1 tablet twice daily (BD), and a combination of Gokshur Churna with Lavana Bhaskar Churna at bedtime (HS). A follow-up USG was conducted on 31st March 2026. Results: The follow-up USG performed on 31st March 2026 demonstrated complete clearance of all calculi. The 6 mm calculus at the ureterovesical junction, the 4 mm calculus at the right mid-pole, and the 3 mm calculus in the left lower pole were all absent. The patient reported complete symptomatic relief without any adverse effects. Conclusion: The prescribed Ayurvedic regimen resulted in the complete expulsion and dissolution of multiple renal and ureteric calculi within 13 days. This case highlights the potential for rapid, safe, and effective conservative management of urolithiasis using classical Ayurvedic formulations, offering a viable alternative to invasive procedures for selected patients.
