Key Points

  • The aim is to explore the relationship between muscle mass, strength, and functional capacity as adults age.
  • Examined age-associated differences in muscle mass and strength
  • Analyzed functional capacity in relation to muscle mass
  • Identified strategies for muscle preservation across adulthood
  • Low muscle mass correlates significantly with decreased strength in men
  • Functional decline related to muscle mass is often underestimated
  • Strategies to enhance muscle mass are vital throughout the adult lifespan

Abstract

Age-associated differences in muscle mass tracked closely with strength (men) and functional capacity. These results indicate that the role of low muscle mass in functional decline has been underestimated, emphasising the importance of strategies to preserve/enhance muscle mass throughout adulthood.
