Adverse Reactions to Blood Transfusion in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study at a Single Center
Key Points
To assess the incidence and causes of adverse reactions to blood transfusions in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
Retrospective cohort study design
Single-center analysis of pediatric cardiac surgery patients
Focus on adverse reactions from blood transfusions
Incidence of transfusion reactions was found to be 0.18%
Most reactions were caused by the transfusion of packed red blood cells (PRBCs)
Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) transfusions were the second most common cause of reactions
Abstract
The incidence of blood transfusion reactions among pediatric cardiac surgery patients is 0.18%. Transfusion of PRBCs was the most frequent cause of reactions in this group, followed by that of FFPs.
