Recurrent Varicose Veins Complicating Pregnancy: A Case Report

Aim and background: Varicose veins in pregnancy is a common entity that can present with a myriad of complications.Hormonal and enzymatic changes coupled with mechanical pressure by the gravid uterus aggravate varicose veins during pregnancy.We came across a rare patient who presented with torrential bleeding from varicose ulcer in third trimester.Case description: This article describes a rare case of vulval and bilateral lower limb varicosities with venous ulceration causing torrential bleeding in a multigravida during third trimester.She required 2 units of packed cell volume transfusion.Owing to her advanced gestational age, she was managed conservatively. Conclusion:Varicose veins during pregnancy can cause life-threatening hemorrhage.Severe cases should be considered for safer surgical interventions like subfascial endoscopic perforator surgery in second trimester.Clinical significance: This case highlights the importance of considering timely surgical intervention in severe cases of varicose veins in pregnancy.
